Marlborough Bra PDF Sewing Pattern

Size Guide
Sizing Information

Bras

There is no single measurement method to determine bra size what bra size will work for every body. The only reliable way to determine bra size is to try on finished bras made from that pattern. Given the bra sizing challenge, we recommend starting by making your ready-to-wear size.

If you do not have a ready-to-wear size or at a loss for what size to start with, we offer the below sizing guidelines for our bra sewing patterns. If you have any sizing questions, feel free to contact us!

  • When taking measurements, be sure to stand up straight and exhale fully.
  • Measure body circumference directly under the bust with the tape measure parallel to floor. Round the measurement to the nearest inch, rounding down if you are at the ½” mark.This is the band size.
  • Measure body circumference at the fullest part of the bust while wearing a bra that is supportive yet made of a relatively thin fabric. Again, keep the tape measure parallel to the floor.
  • Derive cup size by subtracting the band size from the full bust measurement. Consult the chart below to find cup size. For example, if the full bust is 36″ and the band size is 34″, the difference is 2″. Based on the cup size chart above, this difference corresponds to a B cup. If you are in between sizes, use the larger size.

SISTER SIZES

Sister sizes are bra sizes that have the same bra cup volume and underwire size. The difference between sister sizes is the size of the band. For example, the sizes 30D, 32C, 34B and 36A all have the same cup volume and use the same underwire. The difference between those sizes is the band. This blog post has instructions for how to modify the band to reach the sister sizes on this table.

Details

The Marlborough bra is a perennial favorite of my custom clients since it provides such great support and shaping. One of the reasons I like it so much is that this style provides a great foundation for playing with different laces and prints for fun and variety.

The Marlborough is a pretty and supportive full frame underwire bra for everyday featuring:

  • A three piece cup that allows for increased shaping and more ability to play with pattern prints and color combinations;
  • A power bar that moves the breasts toward the front of the body for a slimming effect;
  • A comfortable scoop back that lies smoothly under clothes and enhances support; and
  • A lace upper cup to feel and look pretty everyday.

Notable Pattern Features:

  • An instantly downloadable PDF pattern.
  • Almost no taping required! Most pattern pieces fit entirely inside the printable space of US Letter or A4 size paper. For printing ease each size is grouped together.
  • All pattern pieces are separate, not nested, and clearly show the seam allowance and/or trim allowance as applicable. This allows for construction clarity and simplifies any pattern alterations.
  • The instructions are professionally illustrated, making the seemingly complex steps of bra construction very clear and easy to understand.
  • This pattern was reviewed and graded by professionals who typically send their output directly into production so you can be extra confident that you have a great starting point for your garment.

Size Range:

Available in either A to DD or DDD to J size ranges for 30 to 40 band sizes. Please select the correct size!

Printing Note:

Find your size to select which pages to print. The complete document for each size range is over 75 pages.

Good Pattern with Unclear Directions and Unhelpful Pictures

I would have rated this higher, but I found the directions to be too complicated to follow, and the pictures to be unhelpful. I finally gave up. Fortunately, the fundamentals of bra making are similar across bra patterns. I used the directions for the Harriet Bra instead of the directions given for the Marlborough Bra. That made all of the difference.

I haven’t done anything yet because my kit hasn’t arrived. I’m impatiently waiting cuz I can’t wait to try it
